Maryssa in her home: Lifestyle photography of a Portland artist

Lifestyle photo session meets personal branding shoot for Portland artists and hair stylist.

Check out Part 2 of this series featuring 35mm film portraits

When I first met Maryssa, we immediately vibed. It was like that scene in Broad City when Ilana meets Maeby from Arrested Development. Like - I don't know what it is about this girl. (Probs our identical vibes lol) Our first shoot together was a quick portrait shoot as part of a larger branding project for Concrete Treehouse Salon - the eclectic and colorful hair salon in SE Portland where Maryssa rents a station. I was shooting portraits for all of the Concrete Treehouse stylists and barbers so I was limited to 10 - 20 minutes of shooting with each person. Maryssa was a natural in front of the camera and we were able to hit multiple multiple looks and vibes in a super limited window of time.

Those initial portraits turned out so fire and we immediately started chatting in the DMs about different shoot ideas. We both loved the idea of an intimate lifestyle shoot in her home. Maryssa's apartment is the perfect location for a shoot, I could have spent the whole time just shooting details. We picked a couple different locations around her apartment and moved through the shoot naturally, starting with candids of Maryssa finishing up her eye makeup and eventually moving onto wide angle living room portraits featuring the iconic orange couch.

Interested in a personal branding photoshoot but want to learn more about what goes into them? Here's a quick breakdown of the process:

Storyboarding with Creativity

A personal branding photoshoot is more than just posing in front of a lens. It's a story waiting to be told. Together with the client, we brainstorm ideas, themes, and settings that align with their brand's identity. Whether it's an urban setting, a cozy coffee shop, or a lush outdoor location, the choice is always tailored to the client's vibe.

Wardrobe and Style

I'm all about embracing individuality and expressing oneself through fashion. I encourage my clients to be true to their style and choose outfits that make them feel confident and comfortable. There's no need for fancy designer clothes if that's not your thing – authenticity is the key to personal branding photography.

Day of the Shoot

On the big day, I like to keep the atmosphere relaxed and fun. Nerves are natural, but I strive to create a laid-back environment where clients can be themselves. We laugh, we chat, and we capture those candid moments that truly reflect who they are.

Posing with Purpose

Gone are the days of stiff and awkward poses. I believe in capturing genuine emotions and connections. I give minimal direction, allowing clients to move naturally, making sure their personality shines through each frame.

The Magic of Candid Shots

Some of the most magical shots happen when clients are unaware of the camera. Candid moments reveal a genuine and raw side of a person's character. I always keep my camera ready to capture those unguarded instances that often become the highlight of the shoot.

Post-Processing with a Gentle Touch

With a background in photojournalism, my post-processing style is about enhancing the natural beauty, not altering reality. Subtle edits are made to refine the images while preserving the authenticity of the client's personality.

Empowering the Client

The photoshoot is just the beginning of the personal branding journey. I believe in empowering my clients to use their images effectively. We discuss how they can integrate the photos into their website, social media, and marketing materials to create a cohesive and captivating personal brand.

Building Relationships

For me, personal branding photography is not just a one-time gig. I cherish the connections I make with my clients, and I love to see their brands grow and evolve over time. Building a lasting relationship allows me to continue capturing their stories authentically.

My approach to personal branding photography is all about cherishing individuality, creating a relaxed atmosphere, and empowering my clients to showcase their true selves. Remember, a personal branding photoshoot is not just about pretty pictures; it's about revealing the magic that makes each person unique in their own way.
